TikTok, Reels, and Shorts mono fold: phone speaker and single-bud BT checklist

Short-form vertical uploads often feel huge in studio headphones and thin on the destinations that matter: TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, phone speakers, and one Bluetooth bud. That is usually hard L/R beds, dual-mic speech stacks, and stereo music that was never folded before export. This guide is for short-form vertical platforms, not the longer YouTube / social checklist at royal-cipher. Fix polarity and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds before mono fold.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a loudness maximizer for Shorts, not a widener, and not a substitute for mono audition on a phone speaker. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What short-form mono fold failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Export or bounce the short. Flip the master (or a utility) to mono before upload.
  2. Play on a phone speaker and one Bluetooth bud. Note what disappears: vocal chest, kick, bass, hook presence.
  3. Solo pairs: talk mic vs music bed, dual lav vs boom, stereo beat vs mono fold.
  4. Check correlation on the print, then with music muted vs unmuted (correlation meters).

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity on dual speech or dual music paths

Flip lav vs boom, or layered vocal takes, when chest returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related: dual-mic, vocal doubles.

2. Small delay align secondary paths to the hero

Secondary mic or layered take often arrives a few ms off. Align before you chase width. Different job from spectral repair: vs time-align.

3. One hero speech path for the short

Do not leave lav + boom + room all hot under a music bed for TikTok or Reels. Pick a hero voice, keep backups muted or low. Parallel stacks are classic hollow-hook on phone speaker.

4. Center critical beat and vocal content; quieter hard L/R

Kick, bass, and the hook should survive phone speaker and single-bud BT. If they sit hard left or right, center them or simplify width before export. Related: phone / BT.

5. Skip Haas and imagers before short-form upload

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make headphones huge and phone speakers hollow. Guides: vs imagers, Haas vs phase repair.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B on a phone speaker, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Short-form upload checklist (to send)

1. Label speech vs music bed paths

Name hero mic, backups, and stereo beds so you know what hits the vertical export. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on phone fold.

2. Mono-check the print, then phone speaker, then one BT bud

Studio mono utility first. Then the actual destinations: built-in speaker and single-bud Bluetooth. Related: master bus mono.

3. Treat TikTok / Reels / Shorts as phone-first, not desktop-first

Most views are phone speaker or one ear. Desktop cans lie. Guides: phone / BT, YouTube / social (longer uploads).

4. Optional null / mono workflow before batch export

Host-agnostic habit: DAW null-test + mono-check.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Mono the print → polarity dual speech/layers → delay-align secondary → one hero voice → center kick/bass/hook → skip Haas/imagers → phone speaker + one BT bud check → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a bed → upload to TikTok / Reels / Shorts.
